WHAT TO SEE
SIRACUSA
One of the largest and most beautiful cities of Sicily is Siracusa; it lies between the land and the sea, with its island of Ortigia dividing the coastline to form two protected harbours: the Porto Piccolo or Small Harbour and the Porto Grande or Great Harbour which lies at the feet of the Monti Iblei. The city’s historic centre is located on the island of Ortigia on which ancient Greek temples still stand: the temple of Apollo and the temple of Athena, now part of the Cathedral.
NOTO
Episcopal seat, nominated as “the capital of the Baroque”, its historic centre was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2002 along with other late baroque cities of the Val di Noto. The city’s streets are interrupted by scenic squares and imposing flights of steps which link terraces and varying levels which reveal traditional and more modern restaurants, cafes and shops.
MARZAMEMI
Marzamemi is an evocative little town which has fishing at its heart. Its “Tonnara”, the ancient tuna fishery, is one of the most important in Sicily and dates back to the Arab age. Swimming in its crystal clear waters, feasting on fish dishes while digging your toes in the sand, wandering in Marzamemi’s winding lanes are some of the incredible experiences you shouldn’t miss.
PALAZZOLO ACREIDE
Located between the Monti Iblei, the Anapo Valley and Pantalica, Palazzolo Acreide is nestled between natural oases of rare beauty. Its land has been home to many peoples throughout its three-thousand years of history, including Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, Normans, Angevins and Aragonese. Here we find rock-cut sculptures, such as the famous Santoni, or large saints, but also examples of Liberty style architecture, the Italian Art Nouveau.
TAORMINA
From the top of its hill, Taormina offers incredible views over the nearby coastline with Mount Etna towering in the background. While walking down Corso Umberto, the town’s main road, you can take in the breathtaking views and reach the most famous places of interest. Isola Bella’s beach is the perfect place for those who want to sunbathe and be lulled by the calm waters of the Ionian Sea.
